What to Look For Before Buying

When selecting 5th wheel RV components, protection against friction and wear should be your top priority. Consider installation ease, as frequent replacements can become time-consuming. Material quality directly impacts longevity and performance under various conditions. Noise reduction capabilities significantly enhance your towing experience.

Check Protection Coverage

Look for lube plates that offer comprehensive coverage of your hitch components. The diameter should match your specific kingpin size for optimal protection. Larger plates generally provide better coverage but may not fit all hitch systems.

Consider the thickness of the material, as thicker plates typically offer more durability and protection. Ensure the plate covers the entire contact area between your hitch and trailer.

Value Material Quality

High-density polyethylene or PP plastic construction offers the best balance of durability and flexibility. Military-grade materials provide superior protection against harsh conditions. Avoid brittle plastics that may crack under pressure or extreme temperatures. Consider the weather resistance of the material, especially if you frequently camp in varied climates.

Quality materials will significantly extend the life of your lube plate and protect your investment.

Rating Installation Ease

Tool-free installation saves time and makes replacements quick and convenient. Look for plates with serrated edges that grip securely without additional hardware. Consider plates that can be installed by hand or with minimal effort. Some models may require tapping with a mallet for secure placement.

Easy installation is particularly valuable when you’re on the road and need to make quick replacements.

Verify Noise Reduction Capabilities

Plates designed with noise reduction technology significantly improve your towing experience. Look for models that specifically mention noise reduction in their product descriptions. Consider plates that absorb vibration and eliminate metal-on-metal contact. Quieter towing makes campground arrivals more pleasant and reduces driver fatigue.

Some plates claim up to 80% noise reduction during sharp turns, which can make a noticeable difference in your RV experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my 5th wheel lube plate?

Most manufacturers recommend replacing lube plates every 6-24 months depending on usage frequency. Heavy towing or harsh conditions may require more frequent replacements. Regular inspection can help determine when a plate needs replacement. Signs of wear include thinning material, visible cracks, or reduced performance.

Do all lube plates fit every 5th wheel hitch?

No, lube plates come in different sizes to accommodate various hitch systems. Most standard plates fit 2-7/8″ kingpins, but some hitches require specialized sizes. Always measure your kingpin before purchasing a replacement plate. Using the wrong size plate can compromise protection and potentially damage your hitch components.

Are grease-free lube plates as effective as traditional greased options?

Grease-free lube plates offer comparable protection without the mess and maintenance hassles. Modern materials like high-density polyethylene provide excellent lubrication properties. Many users report reduced noise and vibration with grease-free options. The convenience factor makes grease-free plates increasingly popular among RV enthusiasts.

Can I install a lube plate myself, or do I need professional help?

Most lube plates feature tool-free installation that can be done by the average RV owner. Simply press the plate onto the kingpin using the serrated edges for grip. Some models may require gentle tapping with a mallet for secure placement.

Installation typically takes less than a minute with no special tools required.

What’s the difference between 10-inch and 12-inch lube plates?

The main difference is the coverage area, with 12-inch plates offering more comprehensive protection. 10-inch plates typically fit standard kingpins while 12-inch versions accommodate larger systems. The larger size provides better contact area but may not fit all hitch configurations.

Your choice should depend on your specific hitch requirements and towing needs.
