What to Look For Before Buying
Choosing the right helmet requires careful consideration of safety certifications and proper fit. Buyers must prioritize helmets that meet current industry standards for impact protection. Always ensure the helmet is appropriate for the specific level of contact required by the league.
Check Safety Certifications
Always verify that the helmet meets current safety standards. Look for ratings from reputable testing labs like Virginia Tech. These certifications provide objective data on impact absorption performance. Never purchase a helmet without checking its safety credentials first.
Value Fit and Sizing
A helmet is only effective if it fits the player properly. Measure the head circumference carefully according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Ensure the helmet does not wobble or slide during movement. Proper sizing is the most important factor in overall safety.
Rating Helmet Type
Match the helmet type to the level of play. Tackle football requires hard-shell helmets with advanced impact-dispersion liners. Flag football or 7v7 leagues may only require soft-shell caps for minor protection. Choose based on the actual physical demands of the sport.
Verify Maintenance and Care
Regularly inspect the helmet for cracks or loose hardware. Check the inflation levels of air liners if applicable. Ensure the facemask is securely attached and free of damage. Proper maintenance extends the lifespan of the equipment significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace a football helmet?
