What to Look For Before Buying

Picking a helmet is a big task. I would focus on independent safety ratings first. Always think about the player’s position and how much contact they see.

Check Prioritize Safety Ratings

Check for ratings from labs like Virginia Tech. These provide an objective look at impact management. Do not worry about brand names as much as the data.

Value Ensure Proper Fit

A helmet is only safe if it fits well. Use the sizing guide to measure the head. It should not move or slide during play.

Rating Assess Material Quality

Look for high-quality shells made of durable polycarbonate or advanced composites. Facemasks should be made of reliable carbon steel or lightweight titanium. Check the internal cushioning systems for advanced impact absorption technology like TPU or inflatable liners. Better materials generally lead to longer-lasting protection.

Verify Check League Regulations

Ask your coach about league rules before you buy. Some leagues have strict policies on visors or specific models. Make sure everything is compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a youth football helmet be replaced?

Inspect the helmet before every single game. If it takes a hard hit, have a professional look at it. Most need replacement every few years.

Can my child grow into a larger helmet?

No, a helmet must fit correctly at all times to be safe. Never purchase a helmet that is too large for a child to grow into later. A loose helmet increases the risk of injury during contact.

Are tinted visors allowed in youth football?

Most leagues only allow clear visors. Always check your rulebook first. Coaches need to see the player’s eyes during the game.

How do I know if the helmet fits properly?

It should sit an inch above the eyebrows. It should not slide when the player moves their head. The chin strap must be snug.

Is it worth buying a used football helmet?

I would avoid used helmets. You cannot know the history of the impacts. Buying new is the only way to be sure.
