Stripped or Rounded Bolt Won’t Come Out? How to Remove It Without Damaging Anything

A stripped or rounded-off bolt is one of the most frustrating fasteners to deal with — your socket or wrench just slips instead of grabbing, and every attempt rounds the head off a little more. Here’s how to get it out without making things worse.

Stripped Threads vs. Rounded Head: Know the Difference First

These are two different problems with two different fixes:

  • Rounded head — the outer edges of the bolt head (hex or Torx) are worn smooth, so your socket or wrench spins without grabbing.
  • Stripped threads — the threads on the bolt shaft or in the hole are worn or crossed, so the bolt spins freely without tightening or backing out even after the head turns.

Fixing a Rounded Bolt Head

1. Try a snug-fit tool first

Before reaching for extraction tools, try:

  • A slightly smaller metric/SAE socket that can “bite” into the rounded corners
  • A 12-point socket switched for a 6-point socket (6-point grips rounded bolts better)
  • Tapping the socket on firmly with a hammer before turning, to seat it deeper into what’s left of the edges

2. Use a rubber band or valve-grinding compound trick

Placing a strip of rubber (like a cut piece of an old inner tube) between the socket and the rounded head can add just enough grip to turn it. Valve-grinding compound or lapping paste works the same way.

3. Step up to a bolt extractor socket

These sockets have reverse-spiraled internal flutes that dig into the rounded head as you turn counterclockwise. Sold in sets (like IRWIN Bolt-Grip or similar), they’re the standard tool for this job and work on both nuts and bolt heads.

4. Cut new flats with a rotary tool

If nothing grips, use a rotary tool or angle grinder to cut two flat sides into the rounded head, then use an adjustable wrench or vice grips on the new flats.

5. Weld a nut on top (last resort for accessible bolts)

For badly rounded bolts you can still reach with a welder, welding a nut of the correct size onto the remaining bolt head gives you fresh, sharp edges to turn. This only works if there’s enough clearance and the heat won’t damage nearby parts.

Fixing Stripped Threads

  • Chase the threads with a thread file or die to clean up minor damage
  • Use a thread repair insert (Heli-Coil or Time-Sert) if the threads in a hole are stripped — this restores a full-size, undamaged thread
  • Oversize the hole and re-tap to the next bolt size up if a repair kit isn’t available
  • Replace the bolt entirely if the shaft threads themselves are stripped — bolts are cheap; don’t fight a lost cause

  • 6-point socket set
  • Bolt/nut extractor socket set
  • Thread repair kit (Heli-Coil or equivalent)
  • Rotary tool with cutoff wheel
  • Penetrating oil

Prevent It Next Time

Most rounded and stripped bolts start with the wrong tool size, a worn socket, or too much torque applied at an angle. Always confirm the exact size before turning, use 6-point sockets on stubborn fasteners, and apply anti-seize to threads on reassembly so the next removal is easier.
