Rusted or Corroded Bolt Won’t Turn? How to Remove It Safely

Rust doesn’t just make a bolt hard to turn — it actually fuses the threads together at a microscopic level, so the bolt and the surrounding metal become almost one piece. Forcing it without prep is how bolts snap. Here’s the right order of steps to get a rusted bolt out in one piece.

Why Rusted Bolts Seize

Iron oxide (rust) takes up more space than the original metal, so as it forms between the threads it wedges them together. Add road salt, moisture, or years of heat cycling, and a bolt that was hand-tight when installed can end up needing hundreds of extra foot-pounds just to break loose.

Step-by-Step: Removing a Rusted or Seized Bolt

1. Soak it in penetrating oil — and be patient

Products like PB Blaster, Kroil, or even a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone work by creeping into the threads and breaking the rust bond. Apply it, wait at least 15–30 minutes, and reapply. For badly seized bolts, soaking overnight (or multiple applications over a couple of days) makes a real difference.

2. Apply heat

Heat makes metal expand, which can crack the rust bond between the bolt and the surrounding material. A propane torch works for many jobs; a small acetylene torch or induction heater works faster on bigger bolts. Heat the surrounding material (nut or housing) more than the bolt itself when possible, since it needs to expand away from the bolt.

Safety note: Never apply heat near fuel lines, tanks, brake fluid, or anything flammable.

3. Use the right tool, not more force

  • A 6-point socket (not 12-point) grips better and is less likely to round the head
  • A breaker bar gives more leverage than a ratchet without the risk of stripping a ratchet mechanism
  • Tap the wrench with a hammer (impact) rather than pulling steadily — the shock often breaks the rust bond better than sustained force

4. Try an impact wrench

The rapid hammering action of an impact wrench breaks the static friction of rust more effectively than a steady pull. Many bolts that won’t budge by hand come loose in seconds with an impact gun.

5. Work it back and forth

Once it starts to move even slightly, don’t just keep turning one direction. Rock it — loosen a bit, tighten a bit, loosen a bit more — to work oil into the threads as you go and reduce the chance of snapping it.

6. If it snaps or won’t move, extract it

Preventing Rusted Bolts Next Time
