Nut Spins on Bolt But Won’t Come Off? Here’s How to Fix It

If you’re turning a nut and it just spins and spins without ever loosening or coming free, you’re dealing with a different problem than a spinning bolt — but the fix requires the same core idea: you have to stop one side from moving so the other side can actually turn against it.

This happens a lot on hard lines, exhaust hangers, battery terminals, seat brackets, and any place where a nut backs onto a smooth stud or a bolt shank instead of biting into solid threads.

Why This Happens

A nut spins freely on a bolt (instead of tightening or loosening) for a few common reasons:

  • Stripped or worn threads on the bolt or the nut, so they no longer grip
  • The bolt is also spinning along with the nut, so neither side is being held still
  • Wrong nut for the bolt (mismatched thread pitch), so it was never fully engaged
  • Corrosion or rust has built up between the threads, letting the nut spin loose without disengaging
  • A nylon lock nut has worn out, so the nylon insert no longer holds tension

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Identify what’s actually moving

Before doing anything, figure out whether the nut is spinning freely, the bolt is spinning with it, or both. Hold the bolt head (or the stud) steady with one wrench while you turn the nut with another. If the nut still spins without loosening, the threads themselves are the problem, not the grip.

2. Hold the bolt or stud stationary

Use a second wrench, vice grips, or locking pliers on the bolt head or stud to keep it from rotating. This alone solves the problem in most cases — many “spinning nut” issues are really just a two-hands job that only needed one wrench before.

3. Check for stripped threads

Run your finger (carefully) or a spare nut along the threads. If threads feel flattened, cross-threaded, or sheared off in spots, the nut won’t grip no matter how much torque you apply. In this case, skip to the thread-repair options below.

4. Try a thread-locking or oversized nut

If the original threads are worn, a slightly undersized nut, a thread-locking compound, or a jam nut (two nuts tightened against each other) can sometimes restore enough grip to finish the job.

5. Cut off the nut if it won’t budge

When a nut has essentially become a smooth, useless collar on the bolt, the fastest fix is often to cut it off:

  • Nut splitter tool — clamps around the nut and cracks it open without damaging the bolt threads
  • Angle grinder — cut a slot across the nut, then use a chisel to split it
  • Rotary tool with a cutoff wheel — good for tight spaces where a grinder won’t fit

6. Re-thread or replace

Once the old nut is off, chase the bolt threads with a die (or a thread file) to clean up any damage, then install a fresh nut of the correct size and thread pitch.

Tools That Help Most

  • Two wrenches or a wrench + locking pliers (to hold both sides)
  • Nut splitter
  • Thread chaser or die set
  • Penetrating oil, if rust is part of the problem
  • Anti-seize compound for reassembly, so this doesn’t happen again
